Dr. Anestis N. Gianitsos, MD, age 61, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023. Born on August 31, 1961 in Vrontados, on the island of Xios in Greece, to father Dimitrious and mother Soultani Gianitsos. Memory eternal.
Anestis was born on the windy island of Xios in the northern Aegean. The island is known for its fragrant mastic trees which grow nowhere else in the world. Xios is also an island of many martyrs and saints. He grew up with his saintly grandmother by his side and decided at a young age that he wanted to be a priest. He then immigrated to America with his parents and took a slightly different path.
He became an outstanding urologist, taking on the most complicated cases. He treated thousands of patients and he was known for his compassion. He frequently lost sleep at night worrying for and praying for his patients, until the cancer stopped him.
He was the first chairman of Robotic Surgery at Mercyhealth System, in Janesville WI. Even though the disease was quick, he had an opportunity to get closer to God and to ask for the intercession our holy and most blessed Theotokos.
Survivors are his wife Laurie Hallmark Gianitsos of 28 years, Daughter Alexia (Amauri), and son Dimitri (Mikayla). He is survived by his mother, Soultani Gianitsos, and his brother Stavros (Mirsina) Gianitsos and Sister Vasilia Gianitsos, and 3 nieces (Effie, Theano, and Tonya) . He was proceeded in death by his father, Dimitrious Gianitsos and father and mother-inlaw Charles and Joanne Hallmark.
His final wish is that everyone will come closer to God and be at peace with each other.
Greek Orthodox Church Service will take place on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 12 noon at the New Gračanica Serbian Orthodox Monastery, 35240 W Grant Ave, Third Lake, IL 60046.
Interment Mersinidi Monastery, island of Chios, Greece.

I wish I could gather you and your family to hold. I’m honored to have known Nic. Priceless man who loved life and his family. Be kind to yourself
Dr. G, I had the pleasure of working with you in the OR for the last 10 years. It was always a blast. You had a great sense of humor and your patients were always well cared for! May you rest in peace now that you are no longer suffering. Prayers to your family.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Rest in peace my friend.
Laurie, our heartfelt sympathies to you, Lexi & Dimitri. You all went through so much in Nick's fight against the cancer that took him. Our prayers are with you.
I first met my uncle Nick while I was traveling to Chios for the first time to meet all my distant family. I struggled to navigate the island until I learned that there were other American relatives who happened to be visiting the same day - uncle Nick was a Godsend, and the one day I spent there turned into one of the most memorable of my life. The stars aligned in a less figurative way as I enjoyed my one evening there under a lunar eclipse while listening to his stories of our family history, and overlooking a land that no longer seemed foreign to me. Uncle Nick shared the same name as my father who was his cousin, and who I also lost to cancer. But the time I spent with him that day had made my father's presence palpable again to me for the first time in a long time.
One of the best. So many great times. Love you, my man. Eternal Peace to you and prayers for Laurie, Lexi and Dimitri.
Though We Knew he was leaving, We are sad to see him go. Heaven will be enriched by his good soul. May we all live in peace and love as Nick wished. Condolences to his family.
Dr. Gianitsos was always an absolute pleasure to work with in the operating room! He loved everyone even without knowing them, the compassion for his patients and his talent were so natural. Some of my favorite OR memories and stories, come from him. May he rest in peace, forever seeing the beauty of the world. Thank you Nick for the memories and friendship! May he be remembered forever!
So lucky to have known and worked with Nick for 22 years. Wonderful person and a gifted physician. My condolences to his family.
