John (Jovan) Paunovich, 71, passed away in Danville, Virginia on Thursday, June 1, 2023. Born on January 15, 1952 in Youngstown, Ohio to father Prota Petar and mother Protinica Milka Paunovich. Memory eternal.
John “Jovi” Paunovich was born on January 15th, 1952 in Youngstown, Ohio to Prota Petar and Protinica Milka Paunovich.
The youngest of three sons, he grew up in the Church, both helping his father as an acolyte, being a dedicated camper and later counselor at Shadeland and dancing for his church’s folklore ensemble.
Jovi completed high school in Joliet, IL after his father’s untimely death. Jovi obtained his bachelor’s degree in Colorado and worked for many years as an educator for Denver Public Schools.
He selflessly took care of his mother for several years until her death from Parkinson’s in 1992.
Jovi moved to Florida in 2001 after retiring from teaching, to be closer to his brother Božidar. There he spent several years as the office manager of the Chambers Hair Institute.
He finally settled in Danville, Virginia in 2006 where he purchased and remodeled a home listed on the national register of historic places. In Danville, he was an active member of St. Peter’s Greek Orthodox Church, helping in the altar as he had as a young man in Youngstown.
Jovi was an avid master gardener, accomplished pianist and he enjoyed restoring antiques and chandeliers as a both a hobby and business.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Dr. Božidar Paunovich and George Paunovich. He leaves behind eight nephews and nieces, seventeen great-nephews and nieces, and one great-great nephew. Jovi will be sorely missed by his family and friends throughout the United States and abroad. Vječnaja Pamjat!
Serbian Orthodox Funeral Service took place on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 23060 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, IL 60431.

My special friend , like a brother I never had. We grew up together. He was my best friend, and his family was very close to my heart. When you live with your grandmother growing up , she loved her church , and this wonderful family. She taught me that being Serbian, and how important church was. Our dear Uncle Jovi, you will be sorely missed by us all. We will look back on all of our time spent together with fondness. Mladen, the children and I have a great many beautiful memories of you.
