Prof. Dr. Ing. Vujica Yevjevich, passed away at age 92 on Sunday, March 26, 2006, leaving behind his loving wife Mirjana, daughter Vera (Bruce), daughter Branka (Neil), daughter Rada(Kent), his adoring grandchildren: Kevan, Michael, Elisabeth, Katie and numerous other family members and many friends in Serbia, the Netherlands, Great Britain and the USA. Dr. Vujica Yevjevich was born in southwestern Serbia in 1913. He graduated from the University of Belgrade as a civil engineer in 1936, and as a hydraulic engineer from the School of Hydraulic Engineers of the University of Grenoble, France in 1939. The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts awarded him the degree of doctor of engineering in 1955. From December 1937 to April 1941 he worked as engineer with the regional authority of Macedonia. From April 1941 to September 1943 he was prisoner-of-war, first in Germany and then in Italy. From the capitulation of Italy in September 1943 to the summer of 1944, he lived in Rome under German occupation hiding as an escaped prisoner-of-war. From October 1944 to February 1958 he held various professional positions in Yugoslavia in planning water resources systems, design of hydroelectric power plants and doing research in hydraulic engineering. He arrived to the U.S.A. with his wife and three daughters in February 1958 as the guest scientist at the invitation by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards. Until September 1960 he worked as research hydrologist for the Bureau and then for the U.S. Geological Survey in Washington D.C. Dr. Yevjevich became professor at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado in September 1960, and spent close to 20 years as professor-in-charge of graduate and research program for hydrology and water resources in the Civil Engineering Department. He retired from CSU in 1979. His major responsibility at CSU was development and application of advanced stochastic hydrology. He became a U.S. citizen in 1966. He joined the George Washington University in September 1979 as research professor and retired eight years later in November 1987. During the period 1987-1996 he collaborated with the NATO Scientific and Environmental Affairs Division in the program of cooperation of NATO and Eastern European countries. Dr. Yevjevich has been very much in demand nationally and internationally as a consultant in water resources engineering and as a lecturer. He has earned many national and international awards for his accomplishments. Examples are the receipt of the first award of the just established Ven Te Chow awards of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1996 for his contributions in shaping stochastic hydrology and its application to water resources engineering, as well as the award of Techologiae Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Lund, Sweden, for his contributions in advancing stochastic hydrology.
