It is with a heavy heart that we are informing relatives, colleagues, friends and admirers that on Friday, June 28, 2024, we lost our beloved, kind-hearted, and loving Dr. Milenko Lazarevic, MD PhD. A loving husband, father, and friend to all,
he was born on February 22, 1955 in Belgrade, Serbia to father Božidar and mother Ilinka Lazarevic. Memory eternal.
Dr. Milenko Lazarević was affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Swedish Covenant Hospital, Weiss Memorial Hospital and Ascension St. Joseph-Chicago. He was also a lecturer at several universities and a prominent member of the Serbian-American Medical and Dental Society. This esteemed association awarded Dr. Lazarević the “Professor Dr. Radulovački”, for his selfless service to young doctors.
Dr. Lazarević Dr. Lazarević’s scientific research studies were published in the American Journal of Medicine, Journal of Rheumatology, Serbian Archive for Comprehensive Medicine, and Acta Rheumatologica, in collaboration with Dr. Skosey, as who Dr. Lazarevic referred to as the greatest living rheumatologist in the world.
“I have never divided people by skin color, religion and nationality. It is always easier for people to confide in someone who is fluent in their language. Today, about 70% of my patients are from the area of the former Yuga (Yugoslavia)." He served as a mentor to medical students from all over world who came to the U.S. to earn practical experience. He provided this same service free of charge to any medical student from the former Yugoslavia. “That was my way of helping my colleagues”, Dr. Milenko Lazarević proudly stated.
He was also known for taking care of his patients even after they left his office. The relationship with his patients began with an examination in his office, would continue on when
a patient was admitted into the hospital and often ended in nursing home visitations. Dr. Lazarevic would pay a visit sometimes out of sheer concern and comradery, even without
a strict medical necessity.
Affectionally called Dr. Laza, he was a man with a big heart, always up for a joke and always with a smile with which he would meet and help everyone.
With sadness and deep respect, we will say goodbye to Dr. Milenko Lazarevic, an exceptional man and expert who left an indelible mark through his work and dedication.
His loss is felt by the entire community, which deeply respects and mourns him. He will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom and inexhaustible energy which he brought to everything he did. He took care of all the people who were under his protection, yet he was much more than that. He was so much more than mere words can say. His family was most important to him. He was a pillar of the family that all of us could rely on. And he asked for nothing in return.
Dr. Milenko Lazarević left behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire and guide many generations.
Relatives and friends in America will bid the last farewell to the late Dr. Lazarević on Monday, July 15, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at St. Sava Monastery, 32377 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Libertyville, IL 60048.
Opelo (Serbian Orthodox Funeral Service) will be held at 12:00 noon at the of St. Sava Sava Monastery.
Following the Opelo, the interment will be held at the St. Sava Cemetery.

I was Laza's post-doctoral mentor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine when he first came to the US. Although Laza was a much better clinician than a scientist, we spent a year together before he moved to more clinically-related work with Dr. Skosey. Every year in May, I would receive an expression of gratitude from Laza for giving him a the opportunity to make his life in the US. We got together from time to time and we had planned to meet for dinner after he returned from this year's trip. Alas, this will never happen. Farewell, my friend. mmr

Dr. Lazarevich will be greatly missed. My family and I have been his patients for over 30 years, even long after we moved from Chicago. We thank him for saving our gradnson when he was a toddler and being there for my husband through out his ilness. I thank him for referrals to best doctors without whom I may not have been alive today. It will be very difficult for anyone to fill his shoes. Very few doctors treat patients who do not have health insurance or who are on medicaid. He trated everyone equally. Rest in heavenly peace Dr. Lazarevich.

My mother and I were severely shocked and saddened by Dr Lazarevic’s untimely passing. Dr Lazarevic was not only a great Dr, but a great human being as well! His humor, wit, and exceptionally caring demeanor must have been evident to any and all who ever met him! Entrusting my mom’s care to Dr Lazarevic these past few years has been a tremendous pleasure, and my Mom’s health is better for it. The great Dr Lazarevic will be very sorely missed! My condolences to his family..... I am writing with heavy heart and it is a big shock for me as I did my internal medicine rotation with him. He was wonderful teacher, knowledgeable, kind, caring , humble and wit . We enjoyed his sense of humor while learning a lot from him in medicine . It’s so sad that we lost such a great man . When I was hospitalized in my 30s with a blood clot, it was you who visited me daily at Swedish (and not the *&#( foot doctor). Such a wonderful bedside manner. I loved coming and see you for my various ailments. 10 minutes of Dawn's health and 20 minutes of soccer/family/whatever talk. May you rest in peace, with a little slivo.... Bog.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr. Lazararevic. I can't believe I am writing this. We arrived on the same flight from Chicago to Belgrade. We had a nice conversation while we waited for our luggage. How good it is to be back home! We wished each other a pleasant vacation. I have known Dr. Laza for a long time. Besides being a great doctor, he was a great human being, easy to approach, with a great sense of humor. I will miss him greatly. So long, dear friend. Rest in peace.

Dr. Lazarevic je bio doktor skoro celoj Sajic familiji u Cikagu i okolini. Svi smo ga voleli kao da nam je bio deo familije. Bio je posebno pazljiv prema mojim roditeljima: ocu Miloradu 93 godine i majci Ljiljani 91 godine. Pomogao je i mojoj kcerki I braticu da steknu medicinksu praksu, sto niko drugi ne bi ucinio. Bio je nesebican, dobar doktor i josuvek nemozemo da shvatimo da ga necemo videti. Neka ti je laka zemlja nas dragi doktore Lazo. Ti si sada nas andjeo. Mnogo ces nam nedostajati❤️
