Ljiljana Bencun

(1968 +2024)

Ljiljana Bencun, 56, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2024, after a courageous five year battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born on May 23, 1968, in Osojnica, Zenica Municipality in Bosnia & Herzegovina to Gliša and Milosava Stevanović. Ljiljana is the youngest of four siblings, survived by her sisters Joka (Mladjen) Loncar and Milofinka (Aleksa) Stankovic, and her brother Stanko (Jadranka) Stevanovic.

Ljiljana married her true love, Milenko Bencun, on April 15, 1990. Shortly after, she gave birth to her first daughter, Neda (Goran) Veselinovic, in 1992. Ljiljana endured much hardship throughout this period of her life, as did many families during the war torn era of the 1990s. She emigrated to the United States on November 21, 1995, a date made popular by the signing of the Dayton Agreement, in search of hope and a better future for her family.

In 1999, Ljiljana and Milenko were blessed with another bundle of joy, their daughter Anja Bencun.

For many years, Ljiljana worked as a fragrance specialist at Carson Pirie Scott and Macy's. Many of you may recognize her, she likely wrapped many gifts and helped pick the perfect fragrance for your first dates. Ljiljana was passionate and took great pride in her work.

In August 2019, despite receiving her initial diagnosis, Ljiljana looked forward to the joyous celebration of the wedding of her daughter and new son-in-law and welcoming new in-laws. Ljiljana caught a second wind in her courageous battle with the birth of her grandson, Petar, in November 2023. Her proudest moment in life and biggest motivation was being promoted to "baka."

Ljiljana was selfless up until her last breath. Even in her final moments, she never worried about her diminishing health, but made it a priority to remind her family to always care and love each other.

Although Ljiljana left us all too soon, we take comfort in the Lord's plan and that she is no longer in pain. We will always cherish memories of Ljiljana, her courage and perseverance; her infectious sense of humor; her appreciation for narodna muzika; her love for pečenje; her masterful and world-class pita skills; and her ultimate selfless sacrifice for her family.

Ljiljana’s kind and generous heart will be sorely missed by her mother-in-law Jovanka Bencun, numerous family, nieces and nephews, cousins, kumovi and friends in Chicago, Serbia and across the globe. May she rest in peace and may her memory be eternal.
